Successful business owners work well with customers, employees, and other businesses. In order to do that, you need to be friendly and be approachable. If you do not like to work with people, then don’t try to start your own business. You can still be involved in business, but you will never be the head person, and it will be hard to really move up from a mid-level person no matter how great your ideas are. If you do not like to work with people, and you generally are unfriendly, try something other than service in business.

If you are planning on running a home business, plan on setting up an office. It would be impossible to run a home business from your room, or kitchen. You need a place where no one will come and bother you, and you won’t get distracted by the dishes or the T.V. If you own a home business, no one is going to come and tell you to get back to work, so you have to be self-motivated. Do yourself a favor and find a room where all you do is focus on your home business.  A recent trend is for older stay at home mom’s to start home businesses, and they use old baby rooms as their offices because no one uses them anymore. It gives them a nice place to work without interruption.

Part-time jobs are interesting. It seems like if you do it long enough, you will usually end up disliking it, or realizing that it just isn’t for you. Until you mentally know you are going to turn a job into a career, you will have to move on eventually. For example, I have a friend who works as a runner for a law firm. Unlike most of us, he actually loves his job. The only problem is that he cannot live the lifestyle he wants working 20-hours a week and getting paid $10.00 an hour. When I ask him if he likes his job, he always says he loves it, however, as soon as I ask him why he doesn’t do it for the rest of his life then he says he needs to move on at some point to make more money. It would be nice if we could just find a job we like and not worry about money.
