There comes a point when a design is just a little over the top. It is important to try and come up with new ideas, like the Cold Activated beer can, but some ideas are just ridiculous. One the came across to me the other day was a water bottle with finger grooves. I like where they are going with this idea (making things easier to use) but how many times have you dropped your drink and thought, “If only this had finger grooves!” Maybe someone in charge at this bottling plant has really slippery fingers or something, but I think the general public can hold on to their water bottles just fine. I like the innovation and trying to think outside of the box, but make sure you ask whether or not your change really makes a difference.

Part-time jobs are interesting. It seems like if you do it long enough, you will usually end up disliking it, or realizing that it just isn’t for you. Until you mentally know you are going to turn a job into a career, you will have to move on eventually. For example, I have a friend who works as a runner for a law firm. Unlike most of us, he actually loves his job. The only problem is that he cannot live the lifestyle he wants working 20-hours a week and getting paid $10.00 an hour. When I ask him if he likes his job, he always says he loves it, however, as soon as I ask him why he doesn’t do it for the rest of his life then he says he needs to move on at some point to make more money. It would be nice if we could just find a job we like and not worry about money.

Last summer I had to do an extensive job search. I was looking everywhere for a job and I didn’t really have a strategy until one day when I talked to a family friend. He told me to keep a few resumes in my car at all times, and to just walk into a place where you want a job. He told me to dress nice, and go in and ask to speak with the manager. He said if I show up with a nice resume, smiling, and dressed well, I would get multiple job offers. He told me always attach a resume to the back of any standard application you have to fill out too, because that will help you stand out from other applicants. I spent one day doing this, and got two job offers. That was two more than I got calling and e-mailing people.
